@flink click the "+ Remote" button, enter a gmail.com address like chris.messina@gmail.com, and that should do it.

@flink to subscribe to a group, enter the group's url, like http://identi.ca/group/statusnet . We haven't got group Webfinger addresses in this release.

@edd oh, also, for single-user status.net sites, you can just say @james@status.net or whatever. Bit of a config optimization we did for Webfinger.
